Lamine Yamal Condemns Anti-Muslim Chants After Match

Spanish football prodigy Lamine Yamal has spoken out strongly against discriminatory chants heard during last night’s game. The 18-year-old forward, who proudly identifies as Muslim, issued a heartfelt statement addressing fans who used religion as a taunt in the stadium.

I am Muslim, alhamdulillah, Yamal declared. Yesterday in the stadium, the chant ‘the one who doesn’t boo is Muslim’ was heard. I know it was aimed at the rival team and it wasn’t something against me but as a Muslim, it doesn’t stop being a lack of respect and something intolerable.

Yamal emphasized that while he understands not all fans share such views, those who use religion as a joke or insult are crossing a line.

Using a religion as a joke in a stadium makes you look like ignorant and racist people, he said. Football is for enjoying it and cheering, not for disrespecting people for who they are or what they believe in.

Despite the incident, Yamal expressed gratitude to the supporters who came to cheer positively and looked ahead with optimism:

That said, thanks to the people who came to cheer us on, see you at the World Cup.
