Outrage as Petition Alleges Negligence in Patient’s Death at UMTH

Family Seeks Justice Over Alleged Medical Failures at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital

Written by Thlama Samuel Maina

A storm of concern is brewing in Maiduguri following a formal petition submitted to the Chief Medical Director of University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, accusing the hospital of medical negligence, unprofessional conduct, and systemic failure leading to the death of a patient, Alhaji Nuhu Dantani.

The petition, written by the deceased’s son who is also a legal practitioner demands an urgent, independent, and transparent investigation into the events that led to his father’s death on March 31, 2026.

According to the document, Dantani was initially treated at the hospital’s Kidney Centre, where he underwent a prostate related surgical procedure. He was later discharged with instructions for follow up care. However, his condition reportedly worsened, forcing his return to the hospital on March 13, where he was admitted through the emergency unit.

The petitioner alleges that despite his deteriorating condition, the patient was left for two days without a clear diagnosis or meaningful medical attention. The situation allegedly worsened after his transfer to a VIP ward, where there was said to be a noticeable absence of attending doctors and no structured treatment plan.

Further claims suggest that nursing staff administered treatment without adequate supervision, as the patient’s condition continued to decline. Although he was later moved to another ward under a different doctor’s care following external pressure, his health reportedly failed to improve.

Describing the incident as an avoidable tragedy, the petitioner accused the hospital of gross negligence and institutional lapses. The petition has since been acknowledged by the hospital, bearing an official stamp dated April 16, 2026, and has begun circulating publicly, sparking debate over the quality of healthcare delivery in the region.

As of press time, authorities at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital have yet to respond to the allegations.

Beyond the legal battle and public outrage, this case raises a deeper question that resonates far beyond one family’s loss, how many more silent stories remain unheard within hospital walls? As attention turns to UMTH, many Nigerians will be watching closely not just for answers, but for a sign that accountability in the healthcare system is not optional, but inevitable.
