Former Nigerian striker Michael Eneramo has died at the age of 40 after suffering a suspected cardiac arrest during a friendly match in Kaduna on Friday.

The incident occurred just five minutes into the second half. Eneramo, who won 10 caps for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, collapsed on the pitch and could not be revived.

During his club career, the powerful forward played in several countries, including Tunisia, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. He was widely admired for his physical strength, tireless work rate, and goal-scoring ability.

Eneramo enjoyed his most successful spell with Tunisian giants Espérance, where fans affectionately nicknamed him “Al Dababa” (The Tank) because of his imposing presence and attacking prowess. The club described him as “a symbol of strength, determination and resolve” who created many unforgettable moments.

He reportedly turned down the chance to play for Tunisia before committing to Nigeria, making his Super Eagles debut against Jamaica in 2009. One of his most memorable contributions for the national team came during the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers when he scored in the crucial 2–2 draw against Tunisia at home a result that helped Nigeria qualify for the finals in South Africa (although he was not selected for the tournament squad).

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) described his death as “devastating”. NFF General Secretary Dr Mohammed Sanusi offered prayers for Eneramo’s soul and strength for his family and the Nigerian football community.

Eneramo is the latest former African international to die on the pitch from a suspected heart-related issue. Other high-profile cases include Cameroon’s Marc-Vivien Foé, Ivory Coast’s Cheick Tiote, and Ghana’s Raphael Dwamena.
A 2009 medical research team backed by FIFA found that black African athletes appear to have an increased risk of serious cardiac events during sports. Former Chelsea and Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba has previously called for compulsory medical screening for all professional players in Africa.
May his soul rest in peace.
