Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has unveiled the National Community Food Bank Programme in the North-East as part of efforts to tackle hunger and malnutrition.

The programme was launched on Monday during her visit to Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.
Speaking at the event, Mrs Tinubu said the initiative is aimed at addressing hunger and improving nutrition among vulnerable groups, especially children and mothers.

“This will be our first assignment here in Borno State for our children and mothers,” she said.
Also speaking, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Ali Pate, emphasized the importance of the programme in strengthening community nutrition support systems.
The initiative has attracted support from both the public and private sectors.

The Aliko Dangote Foundation committed ₦20 billion in-kind over five years, while the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited pledged ₦10 billion within the same period.
Similarly, the Emeka Offor Foundation donated ₦500 million upfront, while other anonymous donors contributed $500,000, estimated at about ₦750 million.

Prof. Pate also disclosed that President Bola Tinubu approved a special intervention fund of ₦17 billion through the Social Action Fund to support the programme.

The National Community Food Bank Programme is designed to establish food banks in every local government area, linked to primary healthcare centres supported by the Basic Health Care Provision Fund, in partnership with the Bank of Agriculture.

The programme will provide nutritious, locally sourced food through a voucher system to malnourished children under six, pregnant and breastfeeding women, orphans, and other vulnerable households at high nutritional risk.
