Five governorship aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State have agreed to adopt a consensus arrangement ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial election, in a bid to promote unity and strengthen the party’s chances.

The decision was contained in a letter exclusively obtained by PUNCH Online on Monday. According to the document, the agreement followed extensive and cordial deliberations held at the Maitama residence of former Senate President, Bukola Saraki.
In the letter, the aspirants emphasised the need to place the party’s success above personal ambitions.

“We, the undersigned members of the Peoples Democratic Party in Kwara State who have expressed interest in contesting the party’s gubernatorial ticket for the 2027 election, hereby resolve that the overall interest of the party and its success are more important than our individual ambitions,” the statement read.
They also pledged to accept the decision of the party leadership and support whoever emerges as the party’s flagbearer.
“We jointly affirm our commitment to accept the decision of the party leadership, and we pledge our full support to whoever emerges as the party’s gubernatorial candidate,” the letter added.

The document further revealed that consultations with supporters across the state had already begun to ensure widespread acceptance of the agreement.
The pact was endorsed by Ali Ahmad, Omar Bolaji Gambari, Ladi Hassan Athavs, Olaseni Ibiwoye (SAN), and Kale Kawu, all of whom committed to mobilising their supporters and discouraging actions that could undermine party unity.

Confirming the development, the party’s spokesperson, Olusegun Adewara, described the document as authentic, signalling official backing for the consensus arrangement within the Kwara PDP.

The move is expected to shape the party’s preparations for the 2027 elections in Kwara State, potentially reducing internal conflicts often associated with primary contests.
