The Anambra State Police Command has arrested the parents of twin infants whose lifeless bodies were discovered in a drainage channel along Cooperative Street, Nwokedi, in Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area.

Residents said the bodies were found on Sunday morning wrapped in a box containing baby clothes. Passersby who made the discovery immediately alerted officers attached to the Okpoko Divisional Police Headquarters.

One of the residents, identified simply as Uche, described the incident as shocking and condemned the act, saying there are orphanages where unwanted children could be taken instead of abandoning them.

“This is shameful and should not be encouraged. How can anyone do such a thing in this age when there are many orphanages around?” she said.

Confirming the incident, the spokesman of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, described the discovery as a disturbing case of inhumanity and a gross violation of the sanctity of human life.

According to the police, officers attached to the Okpoko Divisional Police Headquarters received information in the early hours of Sunday, June 21, 2026, about the abandoned bodies of the twins and immediately launched an investigation.

Police operatives secured the scene, gathered vital evidence and commenced investigations, which led to the identification and arrest of the biological parents of the deceased infants.

The suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting investigators in unraveling the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Condemning the act, the Commissioner of Police stressed that every child deserves protection, care and the opportunity to live. He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ensuring that anyone found culpable faces the full weight of the law.
