Thousands of Nigerian students benefiting from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) have expressed growing concern over delays in the payment of their monthly upkeep allowances, leading to widespread rumours that the scheme has been suspended.

Over the past few weeks, several beneficiaries have taken to social media to complain that they have not received their expected stipends. The delays have left many students struggling to meet basic living expenses, including transportation, feeding, and accommodation.

As frustration mounted, unverified reports began circulating online claiming that NELFUND had stopped paying students indefinitely. The rumours quickly spread across social media platforms, causing panic among beneficiaries and prospective applicants.

However, NELFUND has denied the claims, stating that the reports of a suspension are false. The agency explained that while some students may be experiencing delays due to administrative and verification processes, the student loan programme and upkeep allowance payments have not been cancelled.

The Fund urged students to disregard misleading information circulating online and to rely only on official announcements for updates regarding the scheme.

Despite the clarification, many students continue to appeal to the Federal Government and NELFUND to address the payment delays as quickly as possible. They argue that timely disbursement of upkeep allowances is essential to helping students focus on their education without unnecessary financial hardship.

For now, while the rumours of a complete suspension have been dismissed, beneficiaries remain hopeful that outstanding payments will be processed soon and that the programme will continue to provide much-needed financial support to Nigerian students.
